It's my birthday!

Yesterday was my 30th birthday. I thought I'd just start a blog -- see what comes of it.

About me - I'm a guy living in Seattle. I've been living here about two years. Before that, I lived in Japan for five years.

Yesterday was my fifth Japanese lesson with a private instructor I've been taking lessons with. He's pretty good. I started taking Japanese again after my most recent trip to Japan two months ago.. I realized how much I had forgotten, and I've decided I don't want to forget this language. I was very motivated about learning at first. I was spending 4 hours a day studying, and more on weekends. I've since passed that initial phase of hyper motivation.

I spent the weekend in Las Vegas with my family. It was a very nice trip.. my 30th and my mother's 60th birthday. We stayed at the Jockey Club on the strip, and spent time in casinos and watching shows. We saw the Blue Man Group, Cirque Du Soleil's "O" Spectacle, and David Copperfield. David is truly amazing. My sister ended up being chosen as a volunteer. I spent last night looking at all sorts of magic web sites trying to figure out how he made a person dissappear from a crane arm. No luck, but I did run across some very nice card trick explanations.

Going to Vegas also rekindled my interest in poker, the variant being Texas Hold'em. I'd been playing at Goldie's a local casino in Seattle, off and on for a while (mostly off), and players there are fairly good. I had come to the conclusion that I wasn't going to consistently make money by going there. But Vegas, wow... the people there at the 2-4 tables are crazy loose. 8 way pots everytime. I thought I played correctly by being extra tight and only playing premium hands, but I ended up losing around $100 over the three days I was there.

I also played in a side game at the WSOP (World Series of Poker). I saw luminaries such as Eric Seidel, Jesus Ferguson, and John Juanda. My interest has been sparked again. I'm going to Goldie's now to see how it goes.
